Cash Is No Longer King?
Remember when a purse full of notes and coins was all you needed before heading out? Whether it was paying for the paper, a coffee in town, or the bus fare — cash was simply how life worked.
But things have changed. Across Britain, more shops are going card-only, buses tap you in with contactless, and even car parks want you to download an app. For some, it’s wonderfully easy — no more jingling change or hunting for pound coins. For others, it’s left them feeling a little left out.
A recent report showed that cash withdrawals have dropped by almost half in the past decade. Yet millions still rely on it for budgeting and everyday spending — particularly older shoppers who like to see exactly where their money goes.
That’s why campaigners are pushing to keep access to ATMs and cash-friendly businesses alive. Banks are now required to protect cash services in communities, ensuring people can still withdraw and pay the way they prefer.
Cash may no longer be king, but it’s far from gone. Whether you love the speed of contactless or the reassurance of a few notes in your pocket, one thing’s for sure — the way we pay is changing fast, and it’s reshaping life on the high street.
